Does Magnetic
Therapy Really Work?
The theory behind magnetic therapy is simple enough, but does it
work?
Three months ago, if you had
asked me that question, I would have probably answered, "Couldn't
tell." Not because I was skeptical or disbelieving, but because I didn't
know much about magnetic therapy.
With all the different means and
methods out there for getting or staying healthy, you could try something, it
had better be worth the time and the money, right? Nutrition and a holistic
approach to health and healing are very important to me, but I'm also very
cautious about what I put my trust in. A lot of "Miracle Fads" on the
market make some pretty impressive claims and, unfortunately, do not work. My first
reaction to the subject of magnetic therapy was to do what I normally do when
this type of topic is brought to my attention. Assessment of magnetic therapy can take several
forms, including conducting research. This article focuses on specifically the
use of magnetic jewelry and its effects.
The simple version of my
introduction to magnetic therapy goes
like this:
I had been asked about magnetic
therapy occasionally, but never paid much attention to the subject. That is
until I was approached by a friendly, persistent man who seemed to seek out my
assistance specifically to accomplish his mission. By using magnetic therapy
materials like biomgnetic mattress, magnetic wrist pads or magnetic bracelet,
he hoped to get some relief from his high blood pressure at a reasonable cost.
The idea of getting involved had never crossed my mind, but something told me I
really should look into it.
To help him, to normalize his
blood pressure, I made some research and found a specific product that most
people are interested in. I made a series of queries to the actual users of
that product. During my investigation, I came across a friend who is interested
in the same product - a person, who was already made up his mind to use the
stuff. He knew much about magnetic therapy, but was skeptical about the
results, perhaps better informed than me. After a couple of weeks, he called me
and made a testimony: which astonished me. He started using magnetic therapy
and got positive results in ten days of use. To my surprise, he is keeping
well, and his blood pressure is in the normal range. After a week, he told me
he is going to buy four more units of both magnetic mattresses and wrist pads
for his friends and relatives, and said to me, he doesn't care whether it's a
placebo or the real deal, it is doing good things for himself and his wife.
Let's begin by reviewing what magnetic therapy has been proven to do. Many doctors, physical therapists, neurologists, chiropractors, and sports medicine professionals recommend magnetic therapy today. Despite much debate in the medical community over how magnetic therapy works, research has proven over and over again that in most cases it truly does. Various theories have been put forth regarding how magnets work on a cellular level, using electromagnetic vibrations, or about how magnets improve blood flow by attracting iron in our blood. Whatever the theory, magnets appear to be effective in treating many ailments and improving overall well-being.
Some of the positive effects of magnetic therapy that have been documented are pain relief, inflammation reduction, improvement in circulation, energy and balance increase, improvement in sleep disorders, increased oxygen uptake, and improved mobility. Looking at how magnetic therapy works from a circulatory angle, the theory behind it is simple. The hemoglobin molecule takes oxygen from the lungs and distributes it throughout the body. Iron is attracted to magnets, so placing a magnet on or near a certain area of the body increases blood flow to that area.
It has also been found that
injured areas of the body with better blood flow heal faster than areas with
poorer blood flow. The iron in hemoglobin is attracted to the magnet, which
reduces inflammation and promotes healing when a magnet is placed over or near
an injured area.
When we examine magnetic therapy
from an energy perspective, we discover some interesting facts about what the
body is made of and how we are not only affected by magnetic fields but also
create them. In its most basic form, every cell in the human body is an
electromagnetic field that is vibrating. Energy is used by the body to repair
damage and maintain its health. The therapeutic effect of magnets is that they
interact with our bodies' natural magnetic fields, enhancing them with
additional energy, so they enhance both our bodies' ability to perform and
heal.
The Gauss rating system is used
to gauge the strength of magnets. Magnets that are thought to be therapeutic
typically range in strength from 500 to 3000 Gauss. The magnetic qualities of
these magnets will typically be "Hard Ferrite Magnets," which means
they will remain constant no matter how long they last.
All of this information is
readily available if you do a little research, but as I said earlier, there is
only so much research you can do, and you'll find conflicting opinions no
matter what it is you're researching. There comes a point where you have to see
for yourself and draw your conclusion.
The manufacturers should make
sure that the quality of the magnetic products they sell is beneficial to
customers. I received a lot of good feedback from people who had a discussion
with me earlier and who experienced an improvement in various conditions. This
was a good indicator that magnetic therapy was legitimately working for people.
As for myself, I have been
moving my necklace around to different areas to see what happens. It has the
most positive effects when I wear it on my head like a headband. I have used it
to get rid of headaches and I feel more focused when I wear it. I have also
doubled it up as an anklet, which has been great for reducing occasional
swelling in my feet and ankles. So now I have the proof I need to say with
confidence that, yes, it does work.
How magnetic therapy works?
We may have lots of theories about how it works and who knows, they may all be right. Whether something is effective or not is really for the individual to decide. What works for some may not for others, and at the end of the day, what you believe is all that matters.Although we have learned a lot about magnets and their use as alternative medicine, we still have a lot to learn. Scientists and researchers are working hard to answer this question. We know that magnets, similar to Earth's magnetic field, emit a static magnetic field that is essential to life and essential to maintaining optimal health. The energy field created by biomagnets (healing magnets) helps the physical body and the subtle energies of the body to balance and heal itself.
In 1954, Linus Pauling won the Nobel Peace Prize in Chemistry for discovering the magnetic properties of hemoglobin. (Later in 1962 he won his second Nobel prize award for his fight against the nuclear arms race between East and West) According to him hemoglobin is the iron part
of red blood cells. The most common theory suggests that the magnetic field attracts iron in hemoglobin, which increases blood flow. This increase in circulation increases the amount of oxygen available to the body, strengthens the immune system and reduces toxins. As a result, pain and inflammation decrease, and the body's own healing process becomes easier and faster.

Magnets seem to heal the body by eliminating
inflammation and restoring circulation. By increasing blood flow to the
diseased area, more nutrients are available for healing. For example, in the
healing of fractures, the use of magnetic fields increases the attachment of
calcium ions to the thrombus formed at the fracture site. This allows for the
proper formation of a callus, which is essential for proper fracture healing.
Magnets are not a cure-all
solution, however, they are a safe and relatively inexpensive option for
chronic problems and broken bones. Magnetic therapy helps the body heal by
creating a favorable environment for healing. They increase circulation and
bring in essential nutrients and help relieve pain and inflammation.
Magnetic therapy is not backed much
research reports. There have been very few scientific studies on magnetic
therapy's effective mechanism in the present day because, regardless of whether
scientific pieces of evidence exist or not, magnetic therapy is the most
popular alternative medicine. It has been found that static magnetic fields (or
constant magnetic fields) are effective in alleviating inflammation of joints.
Magnetic therapy also promotes good sleep and takes care of several painful
conditions, including arthritis and fibromyalgia.
Customer is King
It is understandable why
magnetic therapy is becoming more and more accepted as a drug-free and natural
remedy because it provides a drug-free and natural cure for many ailments in
this age when 'customer' is considered 'king'.
Biomedical engineering research
The FDA regulates some medical
efficacy claims, but static magnetic fields are generally considered safe, says
Thomas Skalak, chair of biomedical engineering at the University of Virginia.
He and Cassandra Morris, a former Ph.D. student of biomedical engineering,
began to investigate the effect of magnets on blood circulation. The purpose of
this study was to test the claims of some companies that magnetic therapy
increases blood flow.
Research process
Their research involved placing a magnetic field strength of 70 militesla (mT)* near blood vessels in rats. The blood vessels of the subjects were measured before
and after exposure to static fields (SMF). Skalak and Morris found that compressed veins dilated. Magnets can relax blood vessels with reduced blood flow to
increase blood flow. Since SMF is also
believed to constrict dilated blood vessels, the inflammation
caused by vasodilation is significantly reduced, indicating that magnetic therapy is beneficial.
Using anesthetized rats, they injected inflammatory
substances into their hind paws, causing tissue damage. Magnet therapy was
immediately applied to the injured area, and the results showed that swelling
due to tissue damage can be reduced with static magnets if done immediately.
This study was published in the November 2007 issue of the American Journal of
Physiology.

The above study
clearly shows the effectiveness of magnets in reducing tissue damage. It also
shows that if more advanced research is done in the field of magnetic therapy,
there will probably be a more positive attitude among the masses toward this
form of alternative medicine.
Magnetic Therapy - NASA findings
Treatment works on
the principle of balancing electrical energy in the body by pulsating magnetic
waves through different parts of the body. The electric currents created by the
magnets increase blood circulation and oxygen, which helps to cure many
diseases. The natural effects of the earth's magnetic field are considered
important for human and animal health. It is generally accepted that our bodies
benefit in some way from the earth's magnetic field. Rebalancing our bodies
allows us to function at our optimal level. For example, when the first
astronauts returned to Earth sick, NASA concluded that their illness was caused
by the lack of the planet's magnetic field in outer space. To solve the problem,
NASA placed magnets in astronauts' spacesuits and spacecraft, and astronauts
later returned safely to Earth.
Biomagnetic Therapy - A popular alternative treatment
Magnetic therapy, which is a
$5-billion market worldwide, is a form of alternative medicine which claims
that magnetic fields have healing powers. Today, Magnetic therapy is a $5
billion global market due to widespread recognition of its healing powers. Many
people use magnet therapy as an alternative treatment for their ailments, from
joint pain to depression, despite the lack of scientific evidence for this.
People do not hesitate to use magnetic therapy products which are available in
a wide range such as biomagnetic bracelets, magnetic water energy pads,
magnetic driving seat back supports for vehicle drivers, magnetic mattresses,
and many more.
Magnet therapy
for Pets and Animals
In recent years, magnet therapy has gained
popularity among pets. It is considered a safe and simple method to treat
various disorders and often produces positive results without side effects and
high costs. Although magnets are advertised as offering many benefits, many
owners wonder if they work. And if they do, could your dog or cat benefit from
magnetic field therapy? Pet magnet therapy is a wonderful alternative therapy
for your dogs, cats, and other domestic animals to get rid of arthritis and
injuries in. Experiences of pets ensure the effective mechanism of this magical
therapy.
Here are some final
words: I had a gentleman ask me, "Do you think there's
something to this magnetic stuff to do with wellness, or do you think it's all
in the mind?"
My response was this:
The mind is an incredibly
powerful thing, and I think most people underestimate what the mind is capable
of affecting, especially where our health is concerned. I think magnets have a
positive effect on us, and I think that effect is amplified by having a belief
that it will work. I'll tell you something, anything you try with a positive
outlook and a belief that it will work for you will be much more successful
than something approached with a negative attitude. Without hesitating, he said
to me, "I completely agree with that."
As a concluding paragraph, my
four key points when it comes to magnetic therapy are these:
1. Quality does matter
2. Strength of the magnet does
matter
3. Seeing for yourself matters
most
4. And of course presumptions
The rest are just variables...
Wishing happiness and good health to all of you.

* Magnetic flux density
The International System (SI) unit of field "magnetic flux
density" is the tesla (T).
A magnetic field of one tesla is relatively strong. That is why
magnetic fields are also expressed in militesla (mT) and microtesla (µT).
1 T = 1 000 mT = 1 000 000 µT
