Communication
Communicating online can be a fascinating venture,
but the untrained user is open to countless pitfalls. Exhibiting common
courtesy online, informally known as "netiquette", is easier said
than done. When freedom of expression runs rampant, you will find your fingers
can type a great deal before your better nature comes to its senses. What can
you do to avoid nonsense and offensive remarks?
For starters, put your best foot forward when
interacting with others online. Brief, clear comments are always appreciated.
If you have expert advice on a topic, do not hesitate to give it. Your input
could mean a world of difference to some lost soul.
When posting to a group, remember to stay on-topic.
Relevant opinions of all sorts are typically welcomed. On the other hand,
needlessly spamming a conversation with repetitive adverts is not. Trolling a
discussion with sarcastic comments will only create enemies. Adding fuel to the
fire to provoke insults can get you booted from any conversation in the blink
of an eye. Online discussions are often informal, but for the sake of your
readers, try to keep your writing and punctuation as correct as possible.
When you come across a typo, do not point it out
just to draw attention. No one wants to see their weakness exposed. Moreover,
writing in all capital letters gives the impression you are shouting, so lay
off the Caps Lock key.

The
Boston Tea Party
The Boston Tea Party was not a disco-style event where
everyone was drinking tea. On the contrary, it was a protest which led to a
revolution and eventually to a war! The reason it is known as the Boston Tea
Party, is because the protest took place in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, and was
against the sale and price of tea. Which country could possibly go to war
because of tea? England of course!
What actually happened in Boston was members of an
underground resistance group known as the Sons of Liberty (led by man ratted
Samuel Adams), disguised themselves as Native Americans, boarded two British
ships in Boston harbor and tipped a cargo of tea into the water. In total 342
chests of tea were sent overboard costing the owners-The British East India
Company - $18,000.
There was nothing wrong with the tea that Britain
was importing to the USA, in fact it was good quality tea originating in China.
The Sons of Liberty had good cause to protest though: they were revolting
against the constraints put on them by the British government. Being a British
colony, the USA and its inhabitants were subject to British role and had to pay
British taxes. However, these people had no right to vote.
The protest of course led to further disputes
between the British and the colonists and consequently caused the American
revolution. After gaining independence, drinking tea was viewed as unpatriotic
and quickly dropped out of favor. For most Americans now, coffee is their
"cup of tea."

Geocaching
For an escape from it all, people often choose to
go to the countryside. In the past, this meant simply walking, relaxing and
possibly orienteering. With modern technology though, there is a new form of
entertainment in the country: geocaching.
The tagline of geocaching is "the world's
largest treasure hunt." Through the use of smartphones and handheld GPS,
this game has turned the world into one giant treasure map.
A geocache, as the name suggests, is a cache hidden
in a certain geographical location. What that actually means is: a box, ranging
in size from a pea to a car, hidden somewhere outside for other players -or
geocachers as they are known to find. The coordinates of these boxes, or
"caches," are noted and published, along with information about the
area. Other players then come to the area following their GPS to try to find
the hidden cache. When found, players write their name and can remove something
from the box, leaving something else in its place. Importantly, all of this has
to be done without anyone else noticing you, so stealth is essential. The
"treasure" contained within these caches is usually something
symbolic rather than valuable; small toys and trinkets, for example.

Photography
In Victorian Britain, the art of photography was in
its infancy. Single photos were taken, using specialist equipment, owned by
professional photographers. As a result, having a photo taken was very
expensive. However, it was a lot cheaper and more convenient than the only
previous way of having an image captured: a painted portrait.
This level of cost was cheap enough to allow many
more people to have an image recorded, but was so expensive that these people
could only afford one image in their lives. So, what did Victorians choose to
photograph for this once in a lifetime opportunity? Death.
In contrast to today, death in Victorian Britain
was not taboo. Poor medical care, plagues, bad living conditions, and low life
expectancy meant that death was common, a part of life. Strong religious views
provided reassurance that death was the start of peaceful afterlife, and often
an end to earthly suffering.
These two factors created a society where death was
the perfect time to have a photo taken, with families spending large sums of
money on having their deceased relative's image captured, to help them live on
and be remembered.

These photos, which still exist, are most bizarre
and morbid to people today, but at the time they were something to love,
cherish and be proud of for the few who could afford them. A situation almost
unthinkable to modern man, but the photos that in the Victorian era, were ones
to die for!
